The period during which humans began to walk on two legs, rather than four, is a pivotal point in the evolution of our species, which is why scientists continue to strive to determine precisely when this happened.
In this context, a new study reported that the human race began walking on two legs about 7 million years ago. The results were based on the analysis of the thigh and forearm fossils of the Sahelanthropus tchadensis class, a type of great apes that also appeared 7 million years ago, and many researchers classify it within the category of hominids from which Homo sapiens descends.
The fossils on which the study was based were discovered in Chad in 2001.
But the study indicated that these early humans did not completely abandon the use of all four limbs to climb trees, and made a gradual shift towards walking on two legs.
By comparing the thigh and forearm fossils with similar bones from humans, chimpanzees and gorillas, the researchers were able to learn the mechanisms of their use, and how these species were circulating.

Twenty different bone characteristics were identified to determine whether S. tchadensis walked on two or four legs, including the external appearance of the remains and the internal structures.
The researchers concluded that Sahelian humans were generally bipedal, with some tree climbing on all four limbs.
