The director of culture and arts of the wilaya of Guelma unveiled on Thursday a series of exceptional archaeological discoveries, with the unearthing of several sites dating from the Roman era during the year.
These sites, distributed across different localities in the region, constitute part of the history of the Roman occupation in Algeria and represent one of the most important discoveries made in the region for some time.
However, Professor Mohamed Fawzi Muallem, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Guelma, is a specialist in the archeology of dialogue. During the field work, the studies conducted proved that most of the sites that were the subject of the study were Numidian, and the true identity of these monuments are local Numidian sites that were influenced by the Roman civilization, and they are not Roman, as was promoted. It has so far.
Guelma: around ten archaeological sites dating from Roman times discovered
This week, Mr. Boudjemaâ Ben amirouche, director of culture and arts of Guelma, announced that the municipalities of Guelma, Hammam N'bails, Dahouara, Oued Cheham, Aïn Ben Beïda, Oued Zenati, Ain Reggada, Ain Makhlouf and Ain Larbi is home to historical remains dating back to the Roman era, and preventative measures are in place to ensure their preservation.
In total, authorities have discovered9 archaeological sites dating back to Roman times in the last 8 months alone at Guelma .
The latter highlighted the significant number of archaeological discoveries recently, exceeding that of the years 2020 to 2022, with a total of eight sites exhumed at the national level. Mr. Benamirouche underlined the crucial role of the specialized services of the national gendarmerie in these discoveries, as part of the fight against antiquities smuggling and illegal excavations, with the active collaboration of citizens.

Sector experts confirmed that these sites were not yet included in the official list of the Directorate of Culture and the Arts, and had not been classified. These archaeological finds reinforce the historical narrative of the Guelma region, illustrating the presence of various civilizations throughout the ages, including the Roman civilization, particularly predominant around ancient Calama.
These discoveries thus bear witness to the richness and diversity of the material heritage of the wilaya of Guelma, transforming the region into a veritable open-air museum and increasing its tourist potential at the same time.
