The Maya civilization had between 166 and 250 very complex gods and goddesses. They had gods for every aspect of life such as birth, death, ball game, pregnant women, travel, trade, age, youth, health, suicide, wild nature, suicide, agriculture, creation, and even gambling. They were either male, female, or both. They can be old or young.
Sometimes the gods are good, so they bestow fertility, rain, and corn, but sometimes they are evil, sending them hunger, misery, drought, and war.
*Important Maya deities are as follows:
1. Itzama - Itzama: - He is the god of creativity and he is the father of Bakabs who held the corners of the world. He is a teacher of medicine and crafts. He is the supreme god who is often called Hunab Ku and the sun god K'inich Ahau. Therefore, the Maya civilization had a close relationship with science and creativity. Itzama can also be called the god of creation science and innovation.
2. Yum Kax:- He is the god of nature and also the god of plants and animals. He is worshiped by fishermen and farmers. So we find again a close relationship with geography as the Maya people worshiped the nature god for their survival.
3. Maize God:- This Maya god existed in both male and female forms. The female deity was uncomplicated and vegetarian while the male deity was strong and powerful. It symbolized corn, cocoa, beans and jade. He was the god of the arts of copying, dancing, and feasting. . During festivals of life and death, the Maya people would dress as the corn god.
4. Kenich Ahau: He is the Mayan sun god. It also means a royal title given to kings who are believed to be divine. He is present in many Mayan sculptures and pyramids also known as Mayan codices as the god Ji.
5. Chel Chel:- She is the goddess of medicine and the creation of children. She is depicted as an old woman. Hence the relationship with medical science. The Mayans developed medicine and worshiped it.
6. Chuck: He is the god of rain. He is shown to have spectacle eyes which is a very important diet. It symbolizes the basic aspect of colors with its four features. He was the bringer of rain, thunder, and lightning.
7. Kukulkan: He is the serpent god and has feathers. He was also worshiped by the Aztecs and other civilizations. He was the god of peaceful trade with the help of priests. Human sacrifices were made to him. In this case, we see that a number of civilizations worshiped him. This may indicate that both the Aztecs and Mayas were in contact with these gods and appreciated their supernatural powers and thus worshiped them.
