The Toumi family, which ruled Algiers and its surrounding cities in the late Zayani era before the arrival of the Ottomans, traces its lineage to the Amazigh tribe of Hawara, contrary to what is promoted about its Tha’alibi Arab origins.
Sultan Salim al-Toumi, founder and ruler of the Amazigh emirate in Algiers before the Ottoman invasion in 1516, whom al-Toumi sought for help to repel the Spanish campaigns on the Algerian coast and seize his emirate. From here, Algiers fell at the hands of the Turks until their naval fleet was destroyed in the Battle of Navarine in 1827 by the French armies. He was assassinated by Baba Arouj, who was of Greek origin. This emirate extended from east to west. After his assassination, his wife, Princess Toumi Zafira, committed suicide.
