A day will enter the history of human evolution.. a jaw bone dating back 1.4 million years will be found
Archaeologists in Spain have found a jawbone fossil that may help them identify the faces of some of Europe's oldest human ancestors.
The Atapuerca team said the bone, which may be approximately 1.4 million years old, could also give important clues about the evolution of the human face over thousands of years. The team added in a statement that "the first week of July 2022 will enter the history of human evolution."
The fossil, consisting of a fragment of an upper jaw and a piece of cheekbone, was found near caves in the Atapuerca Mountains in northern Spain's Burgos region, a site where other ancient human remains were found.
Scientists indicated that they are still working to determine the age of the bones, as well as the species of human ancestors they belong to.
The first to reach Europe
"We have to continue our research for at least a year, this is a process that takes a lot of time," one of the research team, Jose Maria Bermúdez de Castro, told reporters. He added: "What we can say is that we have found a very important fossil belonging to one of the first inhabitants to reach Europe."
So far, the oldest human fossil found in Europe was a jawbone found at the same site in 2007 that was estimated to be 1.2 million years old.
The Foundation has a rich record of prehistoric human presence on the European continent.
In 2000, the archaeological site in the Atapuerca Mountains was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites, which prompted the United Nations to fund it in order to preserve it. It contains thousands of fossils, and human tools including a flint discovered in 2013 that is 1.4 million years old.
