Today, Tuesday, solar scientists warned of a recently discovered huge sunspot, called AR3055, which is believed to be exploding soon.
Astronomer Apollo Lasky said in a statement yesterday, published on SpaceWeather.com: “There is a wonderful-looking sunspot crossing the center of the solar disk, and a new large dark nucleus has just appeared at the tip,” explaining that it “facing the Earth almost directly, which poses a threat to our way of life."
He pointed out that "the width of the sunspot is more than 6,100 miles (about 100,000 km), and it appears that scientists are not sure whether AR3055 grew to its current size from an existing spot, or evolved rapidly on its own over the weekend, according to to SpaceWeather.com, which also shared animated images of the sunspot, which contains dozens of swirling cores of magnetic energy.
AR3055 appears to be very active, and a sunspot like it could lead to potentially harmful Class M solar flares, or high-energy radiation emissions that could last for hours.
