Tanit, the Amazigh goddess of love, is named after Tunisia and Athens
Tanit, (Tinit, Tanit, Tanith, Tenet, or Tanis), is the goddess of love, fertility, sky and protector of the city of Carthage. They have the name Neith, and its Amazigh origin confirms what a number of historians referred to about Pharaonic Egypt, and indicated that it was a Berber goddess who settled in the western delta. Then she was worshiped by the Greeks, where she was known as Athena, so that both Herodotus and Plato indicated that she herself is the Berber neith, and the greatest Greek city was named after her “Athena ”.
As for the influence of this goddess in the Amazigh countries, it is reflected in what some believe that Tunisia was named after this goddess, Tanith, so that the old name of Tunisia was Tanis, which made them believe that the name was just a distortion of Thaa into the Seine. Historians believe that this goddess was worshiped in present-day Tunisia around Lake Tritonis, where she was born and where the Amazighs practiced female military rituals to glorify this goddess .
The symbol attributed to Tanit is a triangle (sometimes a trapezoid), topped by a circle, and separating these two geometric shapes by a horizontal line. Partial and mosaic paintings, as well as Amazigh ornaments .
The ancient Amazighs, like other peoples, worshiped different gods. Among their deities, Tanith, Amun, Atlas, Anti, and Poseidon emerged. By studying these deities and tracing their spread in the Mediterranean civilizations, one can see the extent of the cultural influence that the Berbers exercised in those civilizations. Amon and Tanit can be considered two examples of this civilizational influence .
