A strange sparrow in the scattered, windswept pastures of the frigid tip of South America has baffled scientists. Little Bird His quiet life highlights the importance of studying the world's most remote places.
On the Diego Ramirez Islands, 100 kilometers from Cape Horn in southern Chile, scientists spotted a subantarctic rayadeto, a brown-striped bird with black and yellow stripes, weighing 16 grams, and with a large beak that surprised biologists.
The reason is that the subantarctic rayadetto, which resembles a species of rayadetto that inhabits the forests of southern Patagonia and nests in the hollows of trunks, was found "living in a place without trees".
"There are no shrubs, no forest species, and yet the forest bird has managed to survive literally in the middle of the ocean," said Ricardo Rossi, a professor at the University of Magallanes in Chile and the University of North Texas and director of the Cape Horn International Institute for the Study of Global Change and Biodiversity Conservation.
He added that the results, published on Friday in the scientific journal Nature, came after a six-year investigation in which the young bird became an "obsession" for researchers.
Rodrigo Vasquez, a biologist at the University of Chile and one of the researchers, said that genetic studies confirmed that the newly discovered species "differs in mutation from the rest of the classic rayadets," in addition to other differences in shape and behavior.
Writing in the journal Nature, the researchers reported that they caught and examined 13 birds on the island, adding: "The Diego Ramirez birds were noticeably heavier and larger...but their tails were much shorter."
For Rosie, this species could become a "symbol ... that would help identify" Diego Ramirez's little-known islands.
