Karima Chaâbane, one of the few Algerian Qanoun virtuosos
The musician Karima Chaâbane, one of the few virtuoso Algerian musicians of the Qanoun, co-founder of the Saoura de Béchar orchestra (about twenty musicians), draws her playing from her passion for this musical instrument and her love for Algerian amazigh music .
Holder of a master's degree in Spanish language which she teaches in a high school in Béchar, Karima learned to play the Qanoun thanks to her tenacity and proven talent, which prompted her to contribute to the creation of the Saoura orchestra. of which she is the only female member, thanks to her playing deemed “excellent” by several local musicians, artists and music lovers.
“Because of my passion for music, I always dreamed of playing a musical instrument, and my first encounter was with the violin, then I switched to the lute, but I did not manage to master their playing, despite all the efforts made to perfect my mastery of these two instruments, until the artist Ammar Amroun, musician-composer of film music and conductor of the Saoura orchestra directed me to the Qanoun”, a- she revealed.
Ammar Amroun was the first to recommend and encourage her to play the Qanoun, even predicting that she was going to be a virtuoso in playing and mastering this instrument. Her inclination and her theoretical and practical knowledge of Algerian Amazigh music allowed her to play it with "perfection and dexterity", she confided.
