The discovery of rock inscriptions in Morocco dating back to 12,000 years in the Berkane region
The ministry stated on its website that this discovery comes within the framework of an international research and cooperation project on “Human Societies in Prehistoric Times in the East.” It has been classified as a national heritage since 1953, due to its geological and mysterious importance, before it acquired this archaeological importance.
The same source added that the research that led to this discovery was carried out by a team of research professors from Moroccan and Spanish universities and institutes under the supervision of Professor Al-Hassan Awaraj from Mohammed I University in Oujda and researcher Ramon Vinas from the Institute of Ancient Human Environmental Sciences and Social Evolution in Tarragona, Spain, with the participation of Professor Abdelhadi ڨ from the University of Casablanca. Chouaib Doukkali in El Jadida, and Ms. Aicha Ajja from the National Institute of Archeology and Heritage in Rabat.
The importance of this discovery, according to the same source, is due to the fact that these inscriptions are the oldest rock expressions that have been discovered so far inside caves and grottoes throughout North Africa, dating back nearly twelve thousand years, which coincides with the last ice age, whose effects also extended to Northern Morocco, bearing in mind that archaeological research is still ongoing at the site in order to accurately date these pre-historic wall art inscriptions and to determine data about ancient human settlement at the site.
The ministry concluded that this new discovery in the east will be added to several unique scientific discoveries in this region, which will have positive repercussions on sustainable development.
