Check out this incredible aerial view of Titan, Saturn's largest moon
During the Cassini mission, the space probe Huygens gave us a wonderful video of the surface of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. We let you admire the landscape…
Let's go back a bit in time… We are on January 14, 2005, the Huygens space probe, a small vehicle developed by the European Space Agency, is approaching Titan , the largest moon in orbit around Saturn.
?What are we going to land on
After having penetrated at about 20,000 kilometers per hour into its extremely dense atmosphere , it lands gently using its various parachutes on the ground of Titan. At that point, astronomers don't even know if their little probe will land on hard, telluric ground. Will it be engulfed in an ocean of gas ? No one can predict
“Titan is the only moon in our solar system to have a dense atmosphere. As it veils the surface, before the mission, we did not know if the surface of Titan was a liquid ocean or a solid body” testifies Alexander Hayes, professor of Astronomy at Cornell University.
A Wonder of the Solar System
Indeed, we know much more about Titan today than at the time of the Cassini mission (the name of the space mission with the objective of recovering data on the atmosphere of the mysterious star of Saturn).
Jewels of the solar system, Titan is a small globe with green and blue hues . Its colors are also reminiscent of those of the Earth seen from space. We now know that it is the only place in our Solar System where we have observed rough seas and large clouds.
Moreover, thanks to the famous James Webb, our new space telescope, we now have splendid pictures of the moon ! We let you discover all this before landing on the mysterious Titan.
Breathtaking landscapes
Thanks to the Huygens probe, we now know what the small planet looks like. It's a world with big clouds, seas, lakes and rivers composed not of water but of liquid hydrocarbons, a world with powerful seasonal rains but also... continents!
The ground of Titan having been worked by the erosion and the winds, this one comprises a great variety of landscapes . On the images of the probe, we therefore see many coasts, crevasses, dunes and immense mountains. It's dreamy, isn't it? We let you admire the show.
