The excavation site where the palm inscription was found
An inscription of the palm of a hand was found on a rocky stone wall in an ancient moat, outside the Old City wall in occupied East Jerusalem, and it formed a question mark and puzzled the Israeli archaeologists who reached it.
The Israel Antiquities Authority stated that an inscription of a palm in the shape and size of a man's right hand was discovered in a thousand-year-old trench, during road widening works near Bab al-Sahira , one of the gates of the Old City in East Jerusalem, which Israel annexed after it occupied it in June 1967.

The discovery of a 9,000-year-old ancient city near Jerusalem
This huge water moat is carved into the rock surrounding the ancient city, and it extends 10 meters in length and between 2 and 7 meters in depth, and unlike the usual European trenches, it was not filled with water.
According to the Israel Antiquities Authority , the Crusaders needed 5 weeks to cross the city and breach its walls and defenses in 1099.
Although the function of the trench is clear to archaeologists, they have not yet been able to clarify the meaning of the palm inscription in it. "It is a mystery we have tried to solve," Zubair Adawi, director of excavations at the Antiquities Authority, said in a statement.

The trench has been covered and palm-patterned, to complement ongoing infrastructure work on the street below the perimeter walls, AFP reported.
