NASA Publishes A Picture Of A “Bear Face” On The Surface Of Mars
From 155 miles above the surface of Mars, a NASA orbiter has captured what appears to be the face of a giant bear resembling that of Paddington Bear, a classic fictional character beloved in the United Kingdom.
Humans tend to be delusional about seeing the structures of faces in everyday objects – such as seeing the 'man on the moon', or a face on a piece of toast.
But a newly discovered crater on Mars may be similar to a "bear face".
And we've seen some strange craters on Mars over the years from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera - like the famous smiley face, or the elephant and the bird.
But what could create a strange feature in the middle of the ?hole in the shape of a bear's nose
“There is a mound with a V-shaped collapse structure (the nose), two fossae (the eyes), and a circular fracture pattern (the head), said HiRISE principal investigator Alfred MacEwen. The circular fracture pattern may have resulted from sediment deposition over a buried impact crater.
The nose could be a volcanic or mud vent and the sediment could be lava or mud flows.”
We'll just need to go to Mars ourselves someday and explore this crater to find out exactly what makes this crater look like a bear.
