Archaeological research on fish salting and carom plexus production plants
Within the framework of the archaeological research program on “Factories for salting fish and producing carom plexus”, which is supervised by the National Institute of Archeology and Heritage in cooperation with the University of Cadiz, a set of probes has been opened with the aim of verifying the data of the geophysical investigations conducted at the site in September 2022 in order to search for furnaces The production of amphorae that transported carrom, and the identification of this part of the site with the general extension of the carrom factories of Pleixos, which exported their fine products to all parts of the Roman Empire.
The interest of the members of this mission, according to what the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Communication stated on its page, was focused on studying some archaeological structures that may have a relationship with the facilities of the port of Lixus, which served as the city’s gateway in its trade relations with the rest of the Mediterranean countries during the various historical periods that took place. I knew this ancient city. The team members also examined the archaeological finds discovered at the site during the summer 2022 excavations.
