Ritual and Orality among the Ait SOUKHMANE: New publication by Aicha Ait Berri
Researcher Aicha Ait Berri has published her new book entitled “RITUAL AND ORALITY AMONG THE AIT SOUKHMANE – The wedding ceremony: a changing practice”.
This study is at the intersection of literary and social studies. It revolves around the wedding ceremony among the Ait Soukhmane. Interpretative anthropology and sociolinguistics unite research and guide it in its investigations. The global and systemic approach makes it possible to take into consideration the different factors that interact within the ritual. The goal is to understand the meaning that its holders give to this practice, to identify the beliefs, representations and values that underlie it, and this, by questioning its different components. It should be noted that orality, in this case the ritual songs, which were collected under the natural conditions of their performance, were the subject of a study (thematic, stylistic and prosodic) which took into consideration the situational parameters. Thus, the cross-cutting themes and values inherent in this practice have been identified, analyzed and commented on. Links with other rituals have been established. And the comparison over time made it possible to highlight the main mutations and the factors that induced them.
Currently, with globalization and technological development, the arts of orality are a place of negotiation, resistance or belonging and constitute a major challenge in the construction of identities.
Aicha Ait Berri is a former education inspector, and a doctor in literature and civilizations. She campaigns for the promotion of Amazigh culture and the promotion of women's rights.
