Algerian Hasina Mori, who teaches medical geology and the history of earth sciences at the University of Johannesburg. In her specialty, she has published studies and research in peer-reviewed magazines and periodicals, which qualified her to be elected Vice-President of the Federation until 2024, making her the first Algerian and African woman to hold this position.
Hasina Mori competed for the presidency of the International Union of Geosciences, and she is also a member of the International Program for Geosciences appointed by UNESCO, with the Korean researcher Daqiu Chang, the Chinese researcher Zhangyan, and the Russian researcher Olag Petrov, and she was in the lead with 36 votes.
In a statement to the international press, Hasina Mori said that she will work, during her four-year tenure, to encourage Algerian and African women to believe in their scientific and knowledge capabilities in order to register their fingerprints in international bodies, in parallel with persuading governments in the Arab and African worlds of the need to pay attention to earth sciences and fund research.
