The use of the Amazigh language in Algerian administrative documents
The issue of the use of the Amazigh language in Algerian administrative documents is a controversial issue, as many Amazigh feel that they are being persecuted and marginalized in this regard. Although the Amazigh language became a national and official language in Algeria after its recognition in the Algerian Constitution in 2016, the Algerian administration still does not use this language in its official dealings.
An example of this is the Algerian Electricity and Gas Distribution Company, which issues its invoices in Arabic. It is saddening to write its invoices in French as well, which is considered a foreign language, and there is no Amazigh language, the mother tongue of the Algerians, which some consider persecution of them and their Amazigh culture. Especially since most of the people who pay the bills for this company are Amazighs, including the Chaouia, the Tuareg, the Mizab, the Shinawa, the Kabyles, the Challah, and others. Will there still be an Algerian if all of these emigrate?
We must encourage the use of the Amazigh language in Algerian administrative documents, and promote its use in all governmental and public spheres. Emphasis should also be placed on enhancing awareness of the Amazigh language in various facilities,, ,, so that everyone is encouraged to express themselves freely and easily in the Arabic and Amazigh languages.
Ignoring the Amazigh language in administrative documents is a step backwards in the path of linguistic and cultural equality in the country. The Algerian authorities must commit to implementing the policies and procedures necessary to effectively implement the Amazigh language in all aspects of governmental and public life.
