The discovery of 8 mysterious rooms inside the Pyramid of Sahoura, 4400 years old
Archaeologists from the Julius Maximilians University in Würzburg discovered secret rooms inside the Pyramid of Sahoura dating back 4,400 years, during conservation and restoration operations. This is the third time that excavations have been carried out inside the pyramid, as the research team began to stabilize the pyramid’s infrastructure to prevent it from collapsing.
The first time the pyramid was excavated was in 1836 by engineer John Bering, and in 1907 the Sahora Pyramid was further explored by Egyptologist Ludwig Borchardt. 100 years after this event, the Julius Maximilians University team began carrying out conservation and restoration work to preserve it. On the structure of the pyramid, the team relied on 3D laser scanning technology to conduct detailed surveys inside the pyramid building.
A secret discovery inside the Pyramid of Sahoura
According to what was mentioned on the dailymail website, the research and excavation team used a detailed survey inside the pyramid using a 3D laser to help them create illustrative maps of all the external areas, corridors and narrow rooms inside the pyramid. The result of the laser scanning resulted in the presence of a secret passage leading to 8 storage rooms that had not been completed. It has been excavated before, but scientists noticed that the ceilings and floors of these rooms were severely damaged.
“This pioneering project represents a milestone in understanding the Pyramid of Sahoura and its history,” said the leader of the research team, Dr. Muhammad Ismail Khaled. The construction of the Pyramid of Sahoura dates back to the period from the late 26th century until the 25th century BC. The pyramid is also known as “Sahu Ra,” the second Kings of the Fifth Dynasty and the first king to be buried in Abusir.
The era of Sahura witnessed signs of prosperity and peace, as King Sahura developed a naval fleet at that time and excavated mines, in addition to trade exchange with foreign lands.
By highlighting the eight storage rooms that were uncovered by the research team, the team explained that although they were exposed to tangible damage, the remains of the original walls and floors could be seen, and then the team began restoring these rooms, with the aim of providing the opportunity to study them in the future, or perhaps they are... Available to the public soon.
The team expects that the process of restoring the Pyramid of Sahoura will lead to adopting a point of view that emphasizes the historical development of the pyramid structures, and takes into account that the restoration operations will contribute to knowing more about the pyramid, how it was built, and the identity of the things that were stored in the secret rooms.
