Cities founded by the Amazighs
Lexus
(in Amazigh: ⵍⵉⴽⵙⵓⵙ) is an ancient city built in 1180 BC by one of the Amazigh kings in the ancient Kingdom of Mauritania. The city experienced great prosperity during the reign of the Amazigh King Yuba II throughout the first century BC. Lixus is an archaeological city 3 km from the city of Larache and 22 km from the site of Zalil, near the Tina al-Yamani community, Tangier Province.
The town was built on the right bank of the Loukos Valley, from the northern entrance to Larache, on a plateau called Choumis, which overlooks the Atlantic coast at an altitude of 80 metres.
From that height, the town overlooks numerous marshes formed by rivers. The town is surrounded to the north by numerous plateaus that are themselves surrounded by cork oak forests. The town's area is estimated at more than 75 hectares.
Among the antiquities found there are Roman baths, temples, and walls dating back to the fourth century AD. There is also a mosaic floor, a Christian church, and other confusing remains.
