The clock...an Egyptian invention
The oldest water clock made of alabaster
This clock, which is classified as the first clock in human history, dates back to the era of the New Kingdom, the Eighteenth Dynasty, the reign of the great King Amenhotep III.. 1370 BC.. and it was used in the Temple of Amun (Amen) in Karnak.
The clock is made of alabaster and contains 12 lines carved on the inside corresponding to the hours of day and night...which confirms that the Egyptian masters were the first to use the duodecimal system.
The idea of making the clock is based on the flow of water through a very small hole made in the middle of the bottom. To find out the time, one would look inside the basin to monitor the water level and read the time according to the nearest line.
As for the outer surface of the water clock, it is decorated with religious shapes and texts in the form of symbols for some planets and constellations. It gives a list of the protective spirits for each of the ten days of the ancient Egyptian week, and in the middle part there are the polar stars... so that these drawings show the extent to which the Egyptian masters have reached in the science of space and the planets. .. as they were the first to discover and invent this science.
