Statue of Merry and his wife Inuya.
Statue of Merry and his wife Inuya. 11280
Meri was the High Priest of Aten and the High Priest of the Temple of Neith. Private statues of this period were very rare, so this statue is considered particularly valuable.
Meri began his career under King Akhenaten as a scribe of the Temple of the Aten at Akhetaten and Memphis, and this suggests that he worked for a period in Akhenaten's new capital at Amarna. After the king's death, he continued to work on the Saqqara necropolis during the reign of the new ruler, Tutankhamun.
Merry became one of the greatest seers (i.e. the high priest) of the Aten and the priest of the Temple of Neith... The inscriptions found in his tomb explain that he changed his name from Merineth to Merry to return again in order to adjust the political climate of that period
This statue dates after the founding of the new capital of Akhenaten in the fifth year, and may indicate that Meri performed part of his work in the capital of Akhetaten.
