is a country located in the western part of Africa on the border with Guinea and Liberia. To the west lies the Atlantic Ocean. Sierra Leone has an area of 71,740 square kilometers, which is four times larger than Kuwait. Its population is 8,791,092 people, twice the population of Kuwait, making it a highly populated country.
Sierra Leone is famous for its blood diamonds. This gemstone brought wealth and trouble, especially during the civil war from 1991 to 2002.
The name "Sierra Leone" came from the Portuguese explorer Pedro da Sintra in 1462. He called it "Sierra Lewa", which means "Lion Mountains" in Portuguese, because the thunder in the mountains resembled the roar of a lion.
