New technology from solar panels that generates electricity at night
Conventional solar technology absorbs the energy of sunlight to generate electricity. But a recent technology has shown the ability of some materials to generate electricity during the night by taking out the heat that they have stored in the morning.
Objects that contain heat (such as a plant, a building, or a human body) need to cool themselves. Therefore, some bodies resort to the radiative cooling process, which consists in emitting waves of electromagnetic radiation invisible to the human eye to produce heat. This phenomenon usually occurs during the night periods and is what leads to the cooling of the planet as the heat waves emitted in the atmosphere and beyond fade away.
Based on this, researchers at Stanford University have installed a new type of solar panel that collects and converts solar energy into electricity during the day like traditional panels, but this new type is able to convert the energy emitted from radiative cooling into electrical energy after the sun is gone.
This new technology can significantly extend the life of solar panels and serve as a sustainable source of energy for the more than 750 million people around the world who live without electricity.
The researchers participating in this study explain that this technology is still in its infancy and needs further development and research before it can be launched commercially.
