Astronomers have recently come to an explanation for the different appearances of Uranus and Neptune, despite the fact that the two planets have much in common.
The two outermost planets in the solar system have similar masses, sizes and atmospheric compositions, yet Neptune appears bluer than its neighbor Uranus .

According to a study conducted by Professor Patrick Irwin at the University of Oxford , Britain, and whose results were published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, the presence of a layer of fog of different degrees on both planets stands behind their different forms.
The study showed that both planets would appear blue almost equally if there was no haze in the atmosphere.
Researchers have developed a model to describe the aerosol layers in the atmospheres of both planets. Using data from the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA Infrared and Gemini North Observatory, an international team of researchers has developed a model to describe the aerosol layers in both planets.

According to Irwin, the model is "the first to synchronously fit observations of reflected sunlight from ultraviolet to near infrared, and it also shows the difference in visible color between Uranus and Neptune," according to the British newspaper, The Independent.
The model includes three layers of fog at different altitudes in the atmospheres of the two planets.
Scientists say that the middle layer of fog particles is thicker on "Uranus" than on "Neptune", which affects the visible color of two planets.
The methane ice condenses on the particles in the middle layer on both planets, forming thick layers of methane ice that pull the fog particles deeper into the atmosphere.
