This drug, called dostarlimab and sold under the brand name Jemperli, is usually used to treat endometrial cancer, but this was the first clinical test to see if it also worked against rectal cancer tumors.
These early results indicated that the treatment is surprisingly effective, as the research team said it may be the first trial in which all cancer patients are cured.
"I think this is the first time this has happened in the history of cancer," said medical oncologist Luis Diaz Jr., of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
It is noteworthy that this sample included only 12 patients, all of whom had tumors with a gene mutation called “mismatch repair deficiency” (MMRd), seen in a subgroup of about 5-10% of patients with rectal cancer.
People with this type of cancer usually undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy before surgical removal of the tumor.
