?Precocious Puberty: Can A Child Be A Teenager At Seven
Puberty usually begins between the ages of 9 and 10 in girls and around 12 in boys. It is manifested by the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics: enlargement of the breasts in girls or the penis in boys, hair growth, etc… Dr. Charles Sultan, a professor of pediatric endocrinology, explains: “When puberty begins before the age of 8 for a girl and before the age of 10 Years in a boy, we're talking about precocious puberty.” Precocious puberty affects young girls in 9 out of 10 cases.
Precocious puberty: a worrying phenomenon
Multiple studies tend to prove that the incidence of precocious puberty is increasing around the world. A US study indicates that the average age for the onset of puberty has progressed by an average of 9 to 12 months. Despite this change in early puberty, the age of first menstruation for young girls remained the same: around age 12.5. According to two studies conducted in the United States and Denmark, the development of the mammary glands progressed by about one year in young girls. Professor Sultan explains this: “The early growth of the mammary glands (between 3 and 7 years) increases. There is a real amplification of this phenomenon and the number of parents who are seeing doctors because they suspect precocious puberty is increasing.”
The professor adds: “The early growth rates of the mammary glands are ten times higher than they were 10 years ago: we are witnessing an increasing change in the size of the breasts of young girls, which has become larger. We even received a baby girl who is no more than 4 months old, but her breasts are the size of an orange.”
? The causes of endocrine disruption, the primary responsible for precocious puberty
Professor Sultan believes that the prevalence of endocrine disruptors in our environment is partly responsible for the onset of early puberty. The specialist affirms: “Industrial products, such as bisphenols or phthalates, and chemicals such as insecticides, are strong endocrine disruptors. It is able to cause premature puberty by activating the hypothalamus.” The finger also points to the natural estrogens that we find in particular in drinking water as a result of groundwater pollution. We must also not forget other factors such as genetics and obesity that may contribute to the emergence of precocious puberty.
Hormone therapy for precocious puberty
If precocious puberty is proven it is important to stop it as early as possible. Target? Avoid developmental delays and other psycho-emotional disorders. Professor Sultan adds that “the emergence of breast cancer after reaching adulthood can also be associated with early puberty.” The only option available today to stop precocious puberty is hormone therapy, which is given in the form of monthly injections, which allows things to get back on track. So, do not hesitate to consult a doctor as soon as the child shows signs of puberty.
