A small, previously unknown, armored dinosaur has been discovered in southern Argentina , paleontologists announced Thursday, August 11th.
It is likely that the dinosaur was walking in a vertical position on its hind legs and roaming the surface of the earth, which was saturated with water vapor about a hundred million years ago.
Scientists said that the dinosaur that lived in the Cretaceous period, called Jakabel Kanyukura, was well protected by a row of armor in the form of bony plates along its neck and back and down to its tail. It was about one and a half meters long, and weighed between four and seven kilograms, similar to a medium-sized domestic cat.
His fossils were unearthed over the past decade near a dam in Patagonia in the La Putrera excavation area in the Río Negro region. Scientists describe Jacabell in a study published in the journal Scientific Reports.
The scientists said Jakabell represented the first discovery of its kind of an armored dinosaur from the Cretaceous period in South America. It belongs to therophoran dinosaur family known for its bony back panels and pointed tail, as well as the tank-like Ankylosaurus covered with armor, and with a stick-like tail.
Paleontologist Sebastian Apistegoia and colleagues found a portion of Jakabell's skeleton with 15 iguana-like teeth.
Jakabell resembles therophoran in its primitive form, although the latter lived well before the Cretaceous period, which raised the astonishment of scientists.
