The US space agency has revealed the list of female astronauts nominated to participate in the "Artemis" program, the first scheduled landing of a woman on the moon, 50 years after Neil Armstrong's successful flight.
Humans first walked on the moon after the arrival of the Apollo mission on July 20, 1969. Since then, many astronauts have gone to the moon and they have all been men.
Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to go into space in 1963
The first unmanned rocket is scheduled to launch later this month as part of three complex missions that will pave the way to return humans to the moon's surface and to land the first woman there within the next three years. NASA has shortlisted nine candidates:
Kayla Barron
A 34-year-old astronaut has spent 176 days, 2 hours and 39 minutes in space. She is the second youngest female candidate to be included in Artemis' list.
Christina Koch
She holds the record for the longest solo spaceflight by a woman in history, spending 328 days, 13 hours and 58 minutes in space.
Nicole Man
An Army colonel and former test pilot who has conducted 47 combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Anne McClain
A 43-year-old former helicopter pilot who also fought in Iraq. She has a lot of experience in aviation and military affairs and has spent 203 days, 15 hours and 16 minutes in space.
Jessica Meir
She has experience in space travel where she spent 204 days, 15 hours and 19 minutes.
Yasmine Moqbeli
The 39-year-old was chosen last March to become the commander of a NASA mission to the International Space Station.
Kate Robbins
A microbiologist with a Ph.D., a cancer biologist, and a well-known astronaut. She became the 60th woman to fly into space on July 7, 2016, aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket.
Jessica Watkins
She is the youngest on the list and is currently in space as a specialist on a NASA mission to the International Space Station that was launched on April 27, 2022.
Stephanie Wilson
The 55-year-old, the second black woman in space, is a seasoned veteran who traveled on three space missions in 2006, 2007 and 2010.
