? "NASA" discovers carbon dioxide in a planet .. What does that mean
NASA's James Webb Telescope has detected carbon dioxide in a planet outside our solar system.
The techspot website, which specializes in technical news, stated that the planet, which is symbolized by (WASP-39), is about 700 light years away from the planet Earth .
This is the first discovery of carbon dioxide on a planet outside our solar system .
The planet in question is a massive gaseous mass of a quarter of the mass of Jupiter, and its diameter is 1.3 times that of Jupiter , the largest planet in the solar system.
The temperature is very high on this planet, at an average of 871 degrees Celsius, partly because it orbits close to its star, as it is located about one-eighth of the distance between Mercury and the Sun.
A previous observation by NASA through the Hubble and Spitzer telescopes had previously confirmed the presence of sodium and potassium water vapor in the atmosphere of this planet.
The discovery of such clear signals of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a planet bodes well for exploration of the atmospheres of small planets, said lead researcher Natalie Batalha of the University of California.
Data like this helps researchers better understand the origin of the planet and how it evolved.
By measuring specifically carbon dioxide, research team member Mike Lane from Arizona State University said they could estimate the ratio of solids versus gases that were used to make the planet.
