A shark that was recently pulled from the depths of the seas off the coast of Australia has baffled scientists with its frightening appearance, with bulging eyes and a strange smile.
Shark experts said they were not sure exactly what species the fish might belong to, adding to the mystery surrounding it.
The story began when fisherman Trapman Bermagui pulled the fish from a depth of about 2,130 feet (650 metres) off the coast of New South Wales in Australia, Science Alert reported Sunday.
The fisherman later shared a quick photo of the shark on Facebook on September 12, showing the rough, sandpaper-like skin of the shark, its large pointed face, large bulging eyes, and the pearly whites of its mouth.

Surprisingly
, the shark's unusual features soon caught the attention of other Facebook users, who were either amazed or terrified by the creature.
Experts have guessed the fish is Isistius brasiliensis, which has the distinctive bite marks it leaves on larger animals.
Other guesses included a goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) or a species of lantern shark (Etmopteridae).
For his part, the fisherman disagreed with online commentators, and suggested that it was one of the endeavor dogfish types.

Its type is unknown!
This species is a gulper shark, a group of deep-sea sharks found around the world, according to the Shark Research Institute.
But some shark experts were not convinced by the words of the fisherman. It may be the "deepwater ketvin shark (dalatias lycha), known in the waters off Australia," said Christopher Lowe, director of the Shark Laboratory at California State University.
