2022 Oscars: The Algerian film selection committee renews the candidacy of the film "Heliopolis"
The Algerian Selection Committee charged by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to designate the film which will represent Algeria at the Oscars 2022 for the prize for Best International Film (Formerly Film in Foreign Language) has just chosen at the unanimity the film "Heliopolis" by Djaafar Gacem
The selection committee chaired by Mr Mohamed Lakhdar Hamina (member of the Oscars Academy), (President) and composed of the following members: Belkacem Hadjadj (Filmmaker and producer), Rachid Benallal (Director-editor), Yasmine Chouikh (Filmmaker) , Salim Aggar (Film Critic and Director of the Cinémathèque), Fawzi Saichi (Comedian) and Salim Dada (Music Composer), have watched four films since October 5: “SISTERS” by Yamina Benguigui, “ARGU” by Omar BELKACEMI , “HELIOPOLIS” by Djaffar GACEM and “DJENIA” by Abdelkrim Bahloul.
After the viewing operation, the selection committee unanimously chose the film “Heliopolis” by Djaafar Gassem, because of its artistic and thematic strength.
The selection committee had already chosen it last year, but the director had withdrawn the film, because the film could not be released in theaters due to the health crisis. "Heliopolis" is the only film of registered works to be released in theaters this year.
The Academy of the Oscars had always had as an important determining condition to be eligible for the competition: the national release of a film in his country in Algeria. The film must also be subtitled in English in anticipation of its screening in the United States, in front of the members of the Academy of the Oscars.
