Russian astronomer discovers a new moon for the Earth
Russian astronomer Gennady Borisov said that the global scientific community has recognized that the asteroid YG2022, which was seen for the first time on December 15, 2022, is a quasi-moon belonging to Earth.
He added, in an interview with “Novosti”: “On December 15, I was able to discover a quasi-moon belonging to Earth. Of course, there is the usual natural big moon belonging to our planet, and there are many satellites orbiting in space. As for this, it is an asteroid numbered YG2022. The size is approximately from 20 to 30 meters, the period of the revolution around the sun is one year. Its absolute value is 26".
According to him, in total, 6-7 quasi-satellites of the Earth whose orbits do not pass through the L3 and L4 Lagrangian points have been discovered so far. All of them are captured at a certain time by the gravitational field of our planet.
Borisov said that, according to computer simulations, the new "little moon" probably began orbiting Earth in 1961 and will continue to be a quasi-satellite for at least another 150 years.
Borisov, an astronomer from Crimea, discovered in 2019 the first interstellar comet so far in history, and it bears his name.
