This ultramassive black hole is also one of the brightest objects in the Universe! TON 618 shines as bright as 140 trillion Suns, or 700 times brighter than the entire Milky Way!
But why is it so shiny? Black holes engulf absolutely everything that comes near them, even light. But the light emitted by gas and matter from the surrounding accretion disk can be extremely bright! Indeed, when matter approaches the black hole, it heats up and shines with intense radiation.
A black hole can be relatively small in size… about three times the mass of the Sun. For example, Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of our galaxy, has an average size: 4.3 million solar masses.
Then there are the supermassive black holes, whose masses exceed 40 billion solar masses. These black holes are cosmic objects that grow endlessly… But one question persists, is there a size limit for a black hole?
