The discovery of a 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite in the Algerian desert
A 4.6 billion-year-old meteorite could shed light on the early solar system, a new analysis suggests.
The meteorite, called “Erg Chech 002” (Erg Chech 002 or EC 002 for short), was discovered in 2020 in the Erg Chech region in the Sahara in Algeria.
According to an article published by the Daily Mail, scientists say that it is the oldest meteorite ever found, dating back to a time when the Earth did not even exist.
It consists mainly of volcanic rocks, which led experts to believe that it came from the crust of a very early planet.
