The origin of the expression: Yekhdhem Afernas or Ya3ddad Farnas syaggi
Afernas is a very popular word in central Algeria up to Soumam
It is related to Prince Firmus Son of Nuval (Nubel) born in Thenia (Tizi Ntaycha) known in Berber as Afarnas or Afernass. Fernas sowed death wherever he went, his first crime was the assassination of his brother whom he dispossessed and since he took the throne he has wreaked havoc in the Roman cities throughout the central part of Algeria from Chlef passing through Médéa, Bouira, to the Soumam valley, hence the expression Farnas passed through here Ya3ddad Farnas syaggiI, he sowed death, destruction and desolation.
When the Romans see a village or a city destroyed they say that it was Farnas who passed through there. In Algiers and in the mountains and the valley of Chlef-Méliana they still say Ddar Farnas.
In 372, Firmus raised the standard of revolt. At the head of nearly twenty thousand men, he achieved dazzling successes: he occupied Icosium, Caesarea (which he reduced to ashes), Ténès. Count Romanus, leader of the army of Africa, was defeated, the insurrection won the
Kabylie_orientale and Aurès. Firmus was proclaimed king.
