The historical center of Bukhara has been an important base for Islamic science for centuries. The well-preserved city center is recognized by UNESCO as an exemplary medieval city. Town planning, urban, economic, and scientific development of Bukhara had a major influence on the medieval Islamic world. The oldest architectural monument is the tomb of Ismail Somoni dating back to the 10th century. For seven centuries until the 16th century, it was the largest Islamic center for the study of Sufism with hundreds of mosques, madrasas or places of learning.
