Satellites detected a unique phenomenon in the world that puzzled scientists.
A lake in Antarctica disappears due to heat
Rising temperatures caused a 315 billion ton iceberg, the largest in 50 years, to break off the ice shelf in 2019.

While scientists were confused about how the huge lake covered with ice suddenly disappeared from the same ice shelf.
International researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, also described this disappearance as a "rare event."
They say it happened during the Antarctic winter in 2019.
According to the Journal of Geophysical Research, the lake's volume and circulation reached 600-750 million cubic metres.

It is nearly twice the size of San Diego Bay, and more than all the waters of Sydney Harbour.
Hydrofracturing
Radar satellites were used to collect data and images of the lake.
Ultimately, a crater-like depression of 11 square kilometers was left in the Antarctic ice shelf.
While the reason for the lake's disappearance is not entirely clear, scientists assume that water seeped through the ice shelf.

Scientists believe that the weight of the water accumulated in this deep lake has opened a crack in the ice shelf beneath the lake.
A process known as hydrofracking, which drained the water away from the ocean.
