Archaeologists find one of the largest Roman cities at the Chellah site in Rabat 11193
Today, Friday, scientists from the National Institute of Archeology and Heritage discovered traces of a Roman-era site in Rabat that contains a port area, a bathhouse, and a cemetery dating back to the second century, at the Chellah site, which is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, and has an area of 3.15 square kilometers.

Archaeologist Abdelaziz Al-Khayari said in a press conference at the site that the archaeological site, which is now the third largest in Morocco, will provide a clear insight into the lives of Roman settlers and Roman Moors or Moro Romans in that era.

He added that the bath, which dates back to the Roman era, extends over an area of more than 2,000 square meters and resembles its imperial counterparts in Rome.

He added that archaeologists also found a headless statue of a Roman god dating back to the second century, noting that when the ancient Moroccans converted to Christianity around the fifth century, it was common to cut off the heads of statues representing Roman gods.

He added that excavations, which began in March, are continuing to find the port and other parts of what is believed to be one of the largest Roman cities in the country, not far from the Bouregreg River.
