Dr. Abdel Rahim Rayhan, an archaeological expert, told Al Arabiya.net that each woman had a box designated for her own cosmetics and tools, in which she placed all her personal items, including face powder, eyeliner, combs, and hairpins, to decorate her hair and install the various hairstyles that ancient Egyptian women were adept at making. Perfume bottles are of different sizes and shapes, so that they come out with the most beautiful appearance that distinguishes them from other people.
He added that a study by archaeologist Abeer Sadiq at the Ministry of Antiquities entitled “Cosmetic Materials and Tools in Pharaonic Egypt” from the beginning of the Old Kingdom until the end of the New Kingdom revealed that Egyptian women’s makeup was simple, and the beautiful features of the Egyptian woman’s face were highlighted behind it.
Egyptian women paid great attention to hair, and there were many ways to care for it and ways to style it as well. They also used pins and combs to make different braids, and depicted various styling processes on the walls of coffins, temples and tombs, such as the coffin of Princess “Kawite” from the Eleventh Dynasty, and used oils and various recipes to preserve it. Hair dyes were also known, and an example of this is the hair of Queen Hetepheres II, wife of King Khafre, who appeared with beautiful hair.
He also said that Egyptian women used two types of kohl: malachite and black kohl. The ancient Egyptian woman used hematite to color the cheeks, including red and yellow, and henna to color hair and nail polish. She extracted perfumes from lotus and iris flowers, as well as aromatic fats from the fat of bulls, deer, and geese. An ancient Egyptian house is a room for purification or bathing, adjacent to which is a room for anointing with perfumes. The ancient Egyptian did not know soap in its current form, but rather used things similar to it, including natron.
He added that Egyptian perfumes enjoyed greater fame than other perfumes from other countries, due to the stability of their scent and the difficulty of their formulations. Towels were used for massage and drying, and their shapes varied.
