The Great Pyramid
The Great Pyramid of Giza has been standing tall since the 26th century B.C. It took 27 years to build, weighing in at around 2.3 million blocks of stone and weighing 6 million tons.
Giza consists of three pyramids - Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure - each named after three kings who ruled Egypt.

Currently, high-energy physicists (HIP) are using scans of the Temple of Khufu in Giza. The new technology uses cosmic ray muons to scan deeper inside the pyramid than ever before, and then map its internal structure.
Mysterious voids
What we see now is only the basic structure of the Great Pyramid. Although the pyramid has been closely studied for centuries, there are mysterious voids that have kept archaeologists scratching their heads.
One of the voids is about 98 feet long and 20 feet high and could have been composed of one large space or several rooms, according to previous scans of the pyramid, while the other is much smaller.
Archaeologists are not certain of the function of either void; The most exciting possibility is that the largest area is the hidden burial chamber of Khufu, who ruled from about 2,551 BC to 2,528 BC.
Cosmic particles
The voids were discovered in 2017 when a project called Scan Pyramids conducted a series of scans that analyzed cosmic particles falling to Earth (muons) to detect spaces within the structure.
Muons are negatively charged elementary particles that form when cosmic rays hit the Earth's atmosphere. They are useful because they behave differently when interacting with stone or water versus air.
Telescope system
“We plan to put in the field a telescope system that has a sensitivity more than 100 times that of the equipment recently used at the Great Pyramid,” a team of scientists wrote in a pre-print paper — which has not yet been reviewed by other scientists. “Because the proposed detectors are so large, they cannot be placed inside "The pyramid, so our approach is to place it on the outside and move it along the base. This way, we can collect muons from all angles in order to build the required data set."
