Hundreds of victims of the “Al Haouz earthquake” arrived in the vicinity of the state of the Marrakesh region, after they traveled dozens of kilometers on foot from the Igoukak region of the Al Haouz province, since the day before yesterday, Thursday, January 18, denouncing the “harsh” conditions in which they live, as a result of what they described as “exclusion.” To benefit from the emergency financial aid allocated to families affected by the earthquake.
The protesters who walked tens of kilometers towards the prefecture of the Al Haouz province, and then to the vicinity of the Marrakesh province yesterday morning, Friday, after spending a cold night in the open in Tahanaout due to being prevented by public forces, despite the passage of more than four months. They raised slogans denouncing the lack of support allocated to families affected by the earthquake, despite the passage of more than four months.
The demonstrators denounced “the local authorities’ ignoring their demands and petitions, rejecting their files even though their homes were damaged by the earthquake, and excluding them from benefiting from the emergency aid amounting to ‘2,500 dirhams.’”
They demanded that what was stated in the royal instructions be implemented, and that they be able to rebuild their destroyed homes, “especially since they live in tents in light of the difficult weather conditions that the affected areas are experiencing.” They also demanded “to benefit from the emergency support (2,500 dirhams) allocated to affected families, and the support directed towards rebuilding their homes damaged as a result of the September 8th earthquake.”
A number of protesters explained to “The Amazigh World” that the idea of organizing a protest march on foot, with the participation of women, men and youth of the region, came after exhausting all the steps and procedures announced by the authorities, such as submitting petitions and complaints and repeatedly registering on the designated site, but to no avail, which Pushing them to take this first step, which will be followed by other steps to come if the authorities do not intervene and put an end to their suffering and address their files,” they said.
Human rights sources reported from the scene that the Director of Internal Affairs in the state of the Marrakesh-Safi region opened a dialogue with representatives of the affected residents and promised them to settle their files as soon as possible.
He assured the protesters that the governor of the Marrakesh region will personally ensure that everything stated in the royal instructions regarding families affected by the earthquake is implemented.
The affected people reacted to what the Marrakesh state official pledged to stop the protests and return to their villages via buses designated to return them to the regions of Igokak, Iguil, and Three Nicoub.
