The origin of the names of Iraq and Baghdad
The origin of the names of Iraq and Baghdad 1---36
Did you know
The naming of Iraq and Baghdad has its origins in the Sumerian and Babylonian heritage in ancient Iraq
The word Iraq is considered to be derived from the Sumerian word Uruk, which means settler, in reference to the Sumerian city of Uruk, the oldest human settler known to history.
As for the naming of Baghdad, its origins go back to the Babylonian era during the reign of King Hammurabi
Where the cuneiform texts mentioned it as [Baghdado and Baghdada], and the name evolved in the Assyrian times to become [Baghdado and Baghdada].
note
Some researchers and historians have attributed the naming of Iraq and Baghdad to Persian origins in a hypothetical manner, but archaeological discoveries in Iraq have completely eliminated these hypotheses.
