The Battle of Carchemish was a major battle fought between the army of the Egyptian Pharaoh Necho II and the remnants of the Assyrian army with the Babylonian army and its Mede ally in the year 605 BC. After the fall of Nineveh in 612 BC, the Assyrians moved their capital to Harran, which is located in present-day southeastern Turkey. When Harran was captured by the Babylonian-led coalition in 609 BC, the Assyrians moved to the city of Carchemish, which was located in the hands of Egyptian forces. Pharaoh Necho II marched. north from Egypt to support the Assyrian remnants, and destroyed the army of Judah at the Battle of Megiddo after King Josiah tried to stop the Egyptian advance
The Babylonian and Median army of Nebuchadnezzar II faced the Egyptian and Assyrian armies at Carchemish, where the Egyptian and Assyrian armies were destroyed. The Egyptian-Assyrian defeat at Carchemish marked the end of the Neo-Assyrian Empire and ended forever the dominance of ancient Egypt over the Levant.
Before the Battle of Carchemish, Egypt had one of the greatest armies in North Africa and was a threat to the Middle East, but the Battle of Carchemish changed all that when the Babylonians destroyed Egypt's power and Assyria's independent existence. The Battle of Carchemish marked the end of the Assyrian Empire, turning Egypt into a second-rate power. Babylon became the master of the Middle East.
