Artificial intelligence scientist Geoffrey Hinton said: The world may face major catastrophes unless the use of artificial intelligence weapons is properly regulated.
The former Google engineer, who left the company last year, compared the use of technology for military purposes to the spread of chemical weapons, warning that “very bad things” would happen before the international community reached a comprehensive agreement similar to the Geneva Conventions.
Hinton stated in a television interview, "The threat he spoke about is an existential threat."
He stressed that "this technology will become smarter than us and will take over."
The computer scientist highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence on disinformation and human jobs, as well as on the weapons of the future.

Hinton also warned that "combat robots constitute one of the threats that will make it easier for rich countries to wage war on smaller and poorer countries, and it will be very bad and I believe it will inevitably come."
He called on governments to put pressure on major technology companies, especially in California, to conduct in-depth research on the safety of intelligence technology.
He continued: “Instead of it being an afterthought, there should be government incentives to ensure companies do a lot of work on safety.”
He also highlighted the enormous benefits that artificial intelligence can provide to humanity, especially in the field of healthcare, adding that he does not regret any of his contributions to this technology.
Many prominent figures in the technology industry have warned of the potential risks posed by unregulated adoption of this technology.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and other industry figures co-signed a letter last year calling for strict regulation of the artificial intelligence sector.
In the middle of last month, American billionaire Elon Musk said: Artificial intelligence will excel dramatically, and become more intelligent than all humans, by 2029.
Musk's statements came in response to what was said by the well-known American inventor and technology director, Raymond Kurzweil, who said: Artificial intelligence will reach human intelligence by 2029.
In previous statements, Musk stated that artificial intelligence could pose a threat to humanity, but close attention to the development of technology will help reduce the potential negative consequences of this intelligence.
Last February, Musk accused Google of insane racism after the artificial intelligence system “Gemini” distorted historical facts and published pictures of black Nazi German soldiers.

A few days ago, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, for “betraying the organization’s founding principles.” And violating a “non-profit agreement” to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity.
