Remnants of the stars of the Milky Way Galaxy
Remnants of the stars of the Milky Way Galaxy 11324
These wisps are all that is visible from a star in the Milky Way Galaxy (open image). This star exploded into a supernova about 18,000 years ago, leaving behind what is left behind the Veil (NGC 6960).
The visible part of the W87 Cygnus Loop, which consists of a group of emission and reflection nebulae, is the first to be observed by astronomer Herschel William Herschel on September 5, 1784. It reaches about 1,500 light-years away from us.

This is an image of a small portion of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant, captured by the Wide Field Planetary Camera on NASA's Hubble Space Telescope on April 24, 1991. The Cygnus Loop marks the edge of an expanding, bubble-like explosion wave from a massive starburst that occurred about 15,000 years ago.
