Child Development Stages: Sitting
Child Development Stages: Sitting 2501
Your child sees a different world around him when he learns to sit on his own and also gains some independence. Gradually, the muscles in his back and neck become strong enough to keep him upright. Then he knows where to put his feet to sit comfortably.
You can help your child to sit by placing his legs apart in a V-shape. This new skill gives him the balance and stability he needs to sit without losing balance and falling to one side. When he can sit up effortlessly on his own, it will only be a matter of time before he moves on to crawling , standing, and walking .
?When will my child be able to sit up on his own
Your baby begins to learn to sit unassisted around the same time he learns to roll over (roll over from side to side) and lift his head up . The muscles he needs to perform this skill develop gradually from birth, becoming reasonably strong between the fourth and seventh months.
By the age of eight months, your baby can sit up well without assistance. Almost all babies are seated on their own by the age of nine months.
?How will my child learn to sit
While you can help your baby to take a propped sitting position from about the first day, he will not start sitting on his own before controlling his head .
From 3 to 4 months
your baby's neck and head muscles are strengthening quickly. During this stage, he learns how to raise his head and keep it high when lying on his stomach .
Then he discovers how to lift himself off the ground and keep his chest high using his arms as if he were doing a mini exercise.
From 5 to 6 months
your baby can sit up well with help and lift his head when his back is straight. He may be able to sit for a moment without your help, but stay close to him for support and surround him with pillows to soften the force of a fall if he falls.
He will soon learn how to keep his balance when sitting by leaning forward with one or both arms resting.
From 7 to 8 months
your baby may be able to sit up on his own without help keeping his back straight. Thus, his hands are free to discover things. He will also learn how to turn when seated to reach a toy he wants to catch.
At this point, he may also be able to move from a lying position on his stomach to a sitting position by pushing his body up using his arms. By the eighth month, he can often sit well without any help.
?When my baby can sit up, will he start crawling or crawling
When your baby has figured out how to lunge forward from a seated position and balance on his hands and knees, he's ready to crawl or crawl .

Crawling is a skill that most children have fully mastered by the time they reach their first year of life. Your baby may learn to move forward or backward on all fours from the age of 6 or 7, but most babies don't usually learn to crawl until a few months after this event.
When your baby can crawl, he will be very energetic and want to explore all the places he can get to. So, start securing your home to make it a safe place for your child before he goes on his rides.
How do I encourage my child to sit
You can help your baby learn to sit by encouraging him to play on his stomach as much as possible. Try to get him to look up with colorful and loud toys or make funny facial expressions and make sounds.
Getting your baby to look up will strengthen the muscles in his head, shoulders, neck and back. These muscles contribute to the development of the ability to control the head required in order to sit.
When he can sit well, put toys and other fun things a little further out of his reach. You'll get his attention as he learns to balance using his arms.
As usual, and especially as your child learns to sit, stay at his side for possible falls.
My baby is nine months old and he can't sit still. Is it cause for concern?
If your baby can't sit up on his own until about nine months old, let your doctor know at your next visit. Children develop differently, with some acquiring skills faster than others.

If your baby was premature or born prematurely (before week 37 of pregnancy), keep in mind that he may acquire this and other skills later than other babies of his age.
