Euronews: 5 new cities are emerging in Algeria
Algeria is embarking on ambitious housing and infrastructure projects and entire cities are springing up and completely transforming the urban space. 170 kilometers south of Algiers , the new town of Boughezoul is under construction and should accommodate some 400 inhabitants.
Indeed, a report produced by Euronews devoted to Algeria shows how 5 new cities have emerged from the ground and are ready to welcome citizens from all over the country. The report also cites a number of government achievements in upgrading infrastructure and addressing the housing crisis.
Boughezoul: a futuristic urban hub
This futuristic urban development project of 20,000 hectares, divided between housing, business districts and agricultural areas, was launched in a strategic region at the crossroads of the North-South and East-West axes.
“We built a modern city in order to attract people and create a balance between the coast, the High Plains and the south. These are new pilot cities. We hope to extend this experience later to other cities.” explains Mourad Ghouati, the general manager of the public establishment of the new town of Boughezoul.
The future city will house the Algerian space agency, a new railway station and a new international airport. The basic infrastructure is complete and 28 kilometers of tunnel network for electricity, fiber optics, drinking water and irrigation networks for green spaces.

Boughezoul is one of five new towns being built in Algeria. Sidi Abdallah, in Algiers, is another, explains Abdelhak Sedaoui, director general of the Development Committee of the new town of Sidi Abdallah. “Our project for the new city of Sidi Abdallah is to create an attractive city, a city with sustainable development indicators and we want to ensure the comfort of our inhabitants. It is a smart, resilient and connected city.”
One of Algeria's priorities has been to eradicate slums and abandoned housing. In the Saharan regions, new housing estates are being built to promote interregional balance. To relieve congestion in large cities, social housing and interest-free loans are offered by the State in satellite districts.
“The technical gallery is a lasting work. Because the new town of Boughezoul has a sustainable character. Says Abdelghani Zerrouki, Technical Manager of the Public Establishment of the New Town of Boughezoul. “So if we need to change a pipe, or an electric cable, it's very simple, effective and doesn't make any noise.”

Another priority was to build numerous stadiums, including the 50,000-seat Jeunesse Sportive de Kabylie for the country's most successful club, Tizi Ouzou. The works are inspected in person by the Minister of Housing, Mohamed Tarek Belaribi.
“The construction of all these stadiums is linked to the enthusiasm of the entire population for sport and competition. This youthful enthusiasm was supported by the public authorities in the construction of these buildings, starting with the sports complex in Oran, where we organized the Mediterranean Games, which went off perfectly. We are also in the process of completing two other stadiums in the capital Algiers, one in Baraki, with 40,000 seats, and another in Douera in order to organize competitions on an African scale.

In addition, over the past two years, three million citizens have benefited from 800,000 new homes. “I would say that we are no longer managing a housing crisis, but rather that we are responding to a demand. And that is why we have started to build these new cities in Algeria, following the instructions of his Excellency the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune.” Said Tarek Belaribi.
