HISTORY OF THAGASTE
The Numidian Damsel is the other name for the Crane (Grus virgo), a species of large waders from the Gruidae family. The origin of this name dates back to the time of Saint Augustine. While the saint was residing in the sumptuous villa of Cassassiacum, today Cassago Brianza north of Milan, in the company of his mother, Saint Monica, she asked her son if he was not too bored in his exile far from his native Africa. Saint Augustine, responding with humor to his mother, said to her: "You see, I am not alone, I am in the company of the young ladies of Numidia", because in Thagaste, these birds were numerous and thus commonly nicknamed, and since then, they have retained this name until today in homage to the great Augustine of Thagaste.
