After many correspondences directed by the International Amazigh Rally to the Governor of the Bank of Morocco, Abdel Latif El Gohari, and demanding that he activate the official nature of the Amazigh language in the institution he supervises, on Tuesday morning, April 23, 2023, the letters of the Amazigh language “Tifinagh” appeared on the facade of the Bank of Morocco and the facade of its museum, to organize Thus, to the “Maroc Telecom” corporation and the headquarters of Parliament. The Amazigh language adorns the façade of the three main institutions in the middle of one of the most famous streets in Rabat.
Pending its inclusion in banknotes and the activation of Article 22 of the Regulatory Law relating to the activation of the official character of the Amazigh language, which explicitly stipulates the use of the Amazigh language alongside the Arabic language, in the data included in coins and banknotes, postage stamps, and the seals of public administrations.
In a letter addressed to the governor of the Bank of Morocco, the International Amazigh Assembly called for “working to include the Amazigh language with its Tifinagh letters in the data included in coins and banknotes, out of respect for the constitution, the regulatory law and the High Royal Decree, on the one hand.” On the other hand, to include them in your banners and signs, especially the facades of your headquarters in the Riyadh district and the former headquarters in the center of the capital, in accordance with respect for the constitution, the regulatory law, and the royal will.”
The head of the group stressed in his message that “continuing to ignore the inclusion of the Amazigh language on banknotes completely contradicts the Moroccan constitution, as well as the regulatory law related to activating the official nature of the Amazigh language.” It also goes against the royal will, which His Majesty has not emphasized since the historic speech of Jadeer on October 17, up to May 3, 2023, the date of His Majesty’s designation of the Amazigh year as a national holiday.
