Republic of Ireland
Republic of Ireland 1--349
Ireland 🇮🇪 is an independent republic, and many confuse it with its neighbor, “Northern Ireland,” which is considered part of the United Kingdom.
The Irish name for Ireland, Eire, comes from the Old Irish word: Erio, the name of a goddess in Irish mythology.
The 1922 state, which included 26 of Ireland's 32 counties, was nicknamed the "Irish Free State" and became known by that name. The Constitution of Ireland, adopted in 1937, states that "the name of the State shall be Eire, or, in English: Ireland." Article 2 of the Republic of Ireland Ordinance 1948 states: “It is hereby declared that the description of the State shall be the Republic of Ireland.” The 1948 Ordinance does not call the country the “Republic of Ireland”, because doing so would put it in conflict with the Constitution.
The United Kingdom government has used the name "Eire" (without the diacritics) and, since 1949, the name "Republic of Ireland" for the country; the name "Ireland" was not used until the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
In addition to "Ireland", "Eire" and "Republic of Ireland", the country has also been referred to as "The Republic", "Southern Ireland" and "The South". In an Irish Republican context, it is often referred to as the "Free State" or the "Twenty-Six Counties".
Ireland is an island, and it is considered the second largest island in Europe after the island of Great Britain. Its area is 84,421 square kilometers, which is approximately the same area as countries such as Austria, the Emirates, and Azerbaijan.
Ireland's population is about 5.1 million people.
The capital of Ireland is Dublin (photo), and it is also its largest city in terms of population (580 thousand people), and the name Dublin literally means “Black Lake.”
According to a recently issued International Monetary Fund report, Ireland is the richest country in the world in 2023, with a per capita GDP (about 145 thousand US dollars).

Ireland is nicknamed the “Emerald Isle” because of the vast green spaces it covers.
Ireland has been a member of the European Union since 1973, and its official currency is the euro.
